Safeguarding is about doing whatever you can to make sure children, young people and adults are looked after properly, kept safe and protected from harm.
The safeguarding team offers support, advice and guidance within Barnsley College in order to safeguard and promote the welfare and wellbeing of all students and their families. Examples of safeguarding and welfare issues include:
- Sexual Abuse
- Emotional Abuse
- Physical Abuse
- Domestic Abuse
- Suicidal thoughts/Mental health
- Substance Misuse
- Sexual exploitation
Reporting a Safeguarding Concern

In accordance with the College’s safeguarding requirements, all students/prospective students are asked to disclose unspent criminal convictions in order to study at Barnsley College. This includes existing students that receive a criminal conviction whilst on a programme of study at College.
If the programme of study requires an Enhanced DBS, you are required to declare all convictions (including warnings, cautions, reprimands) which are ‘spent’ and ‘un-spent’ due to certain professions being exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
Please note that declaring a criminal conviction does not automatically prevent anyone from becoming or continuing as a student at Barnsley College.
For prospective students, it is important that you disclose your criminal conviction at your first point of contact with Barnsley College. For existing students, you must declare immediately upon receiving your criminal conviction.
You will be asked to complete the ‘Confidential Details of Criminal Convictions’ form. Your disclosed convictions will then be assessed in accordance with College procedures and you will be informed of the outcome of the assessment within 2 weeks of the Safeguarding Team receiving your completed form.

Modern Slavery Act Statement
In compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, Barnsley College offers the following statement in relation to its efforts to prevent slavery and trafficking in its supply chain.
Barnsley College is an outstanding Further Education organisation with an interest in Higher Education.
Barnsley College has a zero tolerance approach on slavery and human trafficking and has implemented the following measures to ensure we do not, knowingly, work with suppliers and supply chains which are promoting or funding slavery and human trafficking:
- We actively promote the use of consortiums when procuring goods and services, as these already have in place stringent and detailed contracts and due diligence processes to ensure suppliers are not involved with slavery, human trafficking or any other illegal activity
- When tendering for goods and services, we score against criteria aimed at highlighting any suppliers who may be involved in any such activities. Any admissions of involvement would be given immediate fails and excluded from further involvement in the tender process.
- Within tenders, we ask for details of how suppliers ensure their supply chains are not involved in slavery or human trafficking. A lack of response or a dissatisfactory answer would result in marks being deducted against the supplier’s final score or the company being excluded altogether from the process.
In addition to this, if any of our existing suppliers is suspected of being involved in slavery, human trafficking or and other illegal act, they would be suspended as a supplier and not used again until the college is convinced that they have been cleared of all charges or that there is no case to answer.
