Students get the drink, drugs and drive message

Barnsley College Music students recently attended a presentation by PC Michelle Hudson of South Yorkshire Traffic Police. She spoke to students at the College for 2 hours about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Police are targeting the number of road deaths in the area that are caused by people driving under the influence and the talk was aimed at raising awareness of the dangers caused when driving under the influence.

Police officer PC Hudson and student demonstrating a breathalyser As well as talking to the students, PC Hudson also brought along with her a variety of props so students could sample what it is like to be under the influence, including beer goggles which gives the person wearing them the sensation that they have been drinking alcohol. She also brought along her breath tester and was relieved to find that none of the students tested were found to be under the influence!

The presentation not only highlighted the dangers to you if you drive under the influence, but also demonstrated the damage that can be caused to the body. PC Hudson is a qualified field impairment trainer for the police force and currently trains other officers about the effects of drink and drugs.

PC Hudson arrived in her Police traffic car which certainly drew some attention from students and staff on campus who were relieved to find out she was just at College to raise awareness of these important issues.
