Learning Resource Centres

Barnsley College has two Learning Resource Centres. The Falcon Learning Resource Centre is the largest and supports the subject areas taught on the town campus sites (Construction, SciTech, Eastgate and Old Mill Lane). Honeywell also has a Learning Resource Centre on site.

You are welcome to use any of the Learning Resource Centres. Please remember to bring your student card in order to be able to borrow resources. Learning Resource Centre Staff are on hand to help you use the various resources.
Please check with each Centre for opening times. Brief details of the services are given below:
Learning Materials
The Centres provide access to many types of learning materials, including books, videos, CDs, audiocassettes, newspapers, journals and journal articles. Alongside this traditional library stock there is access to electronic information resources such as Online Full Text Newspapers, Literature Online etc.
Catalogues
Each centre has access to the computerised catalogue. This lists all resources that can be used by students and gives details of where items are located and loan status (eg if item is available or out on loan). Students can reserve items shown as “on loan” on the catalogue by asking a member of staff to reserve the item at the issue counter in each Centre.
Inter-library loans
Materials not held in the Learning Resource Centres can be obtained though an inter-library loan service. Please ask staff for details.
Computers
You can book in advance or just drop in to use the computers. Floppy disks are available for sale in the centres. There are several Microsoft packages available including Word, Excel, Access and Publisher plus access to text and image scanners. Falcon and Honeywell Learning Resource Centres have digital printing. You will need your student number in order to log on.
Internet
All networked computers have Internet access. You should refer to the Internet User Policy and Code of Practice (located in the Learning Resource Centres) prior to using the Internet. Any breach of this policy is regarded as a serious disciplinary matter.
VLE (Virtual Learning Environment)
Access to the VLE is provided on computers with Internet access. The Learning Resource Centre presence on Blackboard (our VLE) provides access to information about Learning Resource Centre facilities and services, links to electronic resources, user education leaflets (eg how to use electronic resources such as Online Newspapers) and links to web tutorials and guides on how to search the web using search engines and subject gateways.
Photocopies
Facilities are available at a reasonable cost in all Centres. Both the Falcon and Honeywell Learning Resource Centres have colour copying facilities.

Binding Services
Projects and assignments can be bound at a reasonable cost in all Centres.
Laminating Services
Work can be laminated at the Falcon and Honeywell Learning Resource Centres.
