When and where will I study?
This is a 1-year programme, which commences in September at Wigfield Centre. The course will involve you in practical work with supporting underpinning knowledge. It will take place on a Saturday 9am-12 noon. The course will last for 24 weeks.
What subject areas will I study?
You will study the following units:
Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
This will involve you in the daily maintenance and monitoring of health of animals including feeding, watering and exercise.
Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
This unit covers the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation and equipment.
Assist with the handling and restraint of animals
This unit will help you develop skills involved in the approach and methods of handling and restraint of animals.
Assist with feeding and watering animals
This unit is about dealing with animal feed including storage and preparation.
Safe and effective working practices in land based studies
This is a requirement of every career in order to help prevent accidents and injuries, not only to yourself but to others and animals. The content of this unit focuses on health and safety in the work place.
Develop Performance in land based industries
This unit looks at individual performance and team work skills.
Animals in the wild and in society
This unit enables learners to increase their knowledge about the species of animals and how people and animals interact.
What equipment will I need?
You will need protective clothing and footwear.
How will I be assessed?
You will build a portfolio of evidence and sit a GOLA (multiple choice test) near to the end of the course.
Where can I go from here?
On completion of this programme, you may wish to progress on to further study such as the first diploma in Animal Care (Level 2), which is available at Barnsley College. Alternatively you may wish to pursue employment in the animal care industry.

Tuition Fees : £POA (fee remission available)
Equipment : £10.00
16 – 18 year olds
Full-time Barnsley College student’s 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees unless the course is listed as FULL FEE PAYABLE.
