Course Content

This course is about the discovery of treasures of the past, the meticulous work of the detective and the exercise of the creative imagination. Archaeology is both a physical activity out in the field and an intellectual pursuit. During this course you will consider the nature of past societies, human achievements, ritual practice, hidden codes, moral values and contemporary issues. You will also study the skills and methods used by an archaeologist to de-code the past. In Unit 1 you will look at the Roman 'afterlife', focusing on art, architecture and symbols. Unit 2 covers the practical elements of Archaeology, in particular how sites are discovered, excavated, dated and interpreted. To help with this you will have the chance to take part in a range of field visits - all designed to further an understanding of our past.
