Entry Requirements
- 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language, Maths and Science (details below)
either GCSE Chemistry at Grade C or above
or GCSE Core and Additional Science at Grade BB or above
please note GCSE Applied Science or BTEC First Diploma Applied Science will not be accepted on this course but is accepted on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science)
in addition Learners with Grade Bs in any two of English Language, Maths and Core and Additional Science will be considered and assessed for suitability at induction
plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work
Course Content
You gain an AS Level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A Level after successfully completing Year 2.
Year 1
Atoms, Bonds and Groups:
This unit covers basic ideas about bonding and develops an understanding of the periodic table.
Chains, Energy and Resources:
The chemistry of carbon compounds. Ideas about equilibria and rates of reaction are introduced. This module also explores the ways in which chemistry can help minimise environmental pollution & maximise our use of resources.
Year 2
Rings, Polymers and Analysis:
The role of organic chemistry in the modern world. Analytical techniques such as spectroscopy and chromatography are used.
Equilibrium, Energetics and Elements:
A further study of rates of reaction, equilibrium and energy changes. An introduction to the chemistry of the transition elements.
Assessment
Examination and internal assessment of practical skills and experimental tasks.
Progression
A Level Chemistry is practical for many degree courses including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Forensic Science, Environmental Science and Engineering.
