When and how will I study?
This is a 1 year programme, which commences in September at the Mechanical Engineering site of Barnsley College.
The Certificate is mainly theoretical work, designed to introduce you to a wide range of engineering related topics, with a strong bias towards industrial applications.
What subject areas will I study?
The qualification consists of eleven units. Six Core units and five specialist units.
Core Units:
Communications for Technicians
Mechanical Principles and Applications
Mathematics for Technicians
Specialist Units: 3 units
Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials
Applications of Mechanical System and Technology.
Engineering Drawing for Technicians
Core Units:
Business Systems for Technicians
Electrical & Electronic Principles
Engineering Project
Specialist Units: 2 units
Computer Aided Drafting
Computer Numerical Control
As an addition to the National Certificate, students will also study on a P.E.O. (Performing Engineering Operations) course. This is an N.V.Q. Level 2 Qualification and is mainly workshop based. This will gain students an extra qualification and assist in the understanding of the practical aspects of the units studied.
What equipment will I need?
You will require a scientific calculator and Engineering Drawing equipment, pens etc. for use in the classroom.
Also you will require steel toe cap safety boots and full length overalls for the workshop
How will I be assessed?
Individual units on the Award course will be assessed using a range of methods, which will include practical and written assignments, and written tests. All of the units are assessed internally with the assessment set by the college staff.
