  • 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language

    plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work

Course Content

You gain an AS Level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A Level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1

Categorising Texts
Introduces the study of language, using a variety of spoken and written extracts. In addition, it focuses on three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender, and Language and Technology.

Creating Texts
This is a coursework unit where you will be encouraged to develop your own writing skills, writing in different genres, for different audiences and purposes.

Year 2

Developing Language
Focuses in detail on two specific areas of language study – how children learn to speak, read and write and how the English language has changed, and continues to change, over time.

Investigating Language
This is a coursework unit which allows you to research and report on a chosen aspect of language in use.

Progression

An A Level in English Language is valued by both Higher Education establishments and employers, since it shows both a high level of communication skills and the ability to think analytically. Careers include: Consultant, Lawyer, Librarian, Copywriter, Journalist, Teacher (Home or Abroad), PR Executive and Publisher.

What subjects can I study with this course? English Language is a perfect complement to most other A Level subjects. Many students combine the course with Media Studies, Languages, Sociology or Psychology.
