Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements or previous experience needed to join this course. Before you start you will have an initial assessment at the Old Mill Land Site. This is to work out what level you are starting from. Your tutor will then work with you to agree an Individual Learning Plan that suits your needs and learning style.

What is this course about?
ESOL qualifications are for adult learners whose first language is not English, and who are living or trying to settle in England. This course will make it easier for you to talk to doctors and teachers; understand the laws and customs of the UK and do a course and get a qualification. By you doing this course you can help your child with homework. It may also help you pass the Life in the UK test and become a British citizen.
What subject areas will I study?
You will improve your skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar.
You will learn a range of skills from improving your writing and constructing simple sentence to planning and drafting your written work and writing in paragraphs.You will be able to proof read and correct writing for grammar and spelling errors.
You will develop your reading skills so that you can understand signs and notices, timetables and sets of instructions.
These skills can then be further developed so you are able to read newspapers or magazine articles and short reports.
You will quickly be able to have conversations in English and give and receive simple information, including giving descriptions, opinions and suggestions.
These skills can then be practiced so that you can talk about past or future events, plan what you will say and feel confident when taking part in a discussion with a group of people.
You will carry out tasks that will enable you to complete personal details on forms, such as when at the doctors, Job Centre or Benefits Agency.
You will develop your speaking and listening skills by taking part in role plays or discussion on everyday topics such as applying for work, finding out about public transport routes and journey times.
You will be able to make contributions about how the weather is doing, a topic always discussed in Britain.
You will feel more confident when buying goods and services.
You will be able to complete applications for employment and offer information to an employer about your job related skills.
You will be able to contribute to current affairs topics by reading simple text on health, education and local and national government.
What equipment will I need?
It would be helpful if you brought some pens, paper to write on and a folder to put your work in.
How will I be assessed?
Assssment is by examination and continuous assessment. Learners have regular meetings with a tutor to discuss progress and to help plan studies.

Where can I go from here?
This can lead to more advanced ESOL courses at the College or progression onto higher level mainstream courses.
