Foundation Learning Level 1 Study Programme

Start Date / Duration

The course can be tailored to an individual's needs and can start at anytime throughout the year. The length of the course will depend on the individual tailored programme.

Entry requirements

You must be 16-18 years of age (or 19-25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan). Some 14-16 year olds may also be able to join the course. This course is suitable for students who do not meet the entry requirements for Level 2 or above courses. If you are expecting to achieve GCSE grades of 3 or above then you should apply for a specific course at Level 2 or 3.

You will achieve

  • You will achieve an Award/Certificate or Diploma in Skills for Employment and Further Learning OR Employability Skills Level 1.
  • Functional skills or GCSE in English and Maths.

Course overview

This study programme will provide you with the essential skills required to enable personal development in preparation for life, learning and employment.

Please note: this course is suitable for students who do not meet the entry requirements for Level 2 or above courses. If you are expecting to achieve GCSE grades of 3 or above then you should apply for a specific course at Level 2 or 3.

Course content

Your course will include:

Tutorials – Weekly mentor-led sessions and group discussions.

Skills for progression – Developing skills including working as a team, resilience, communication, developing a positive outlook as well as support with filling in application forms, creating a CV and building self-confidence.

Maths and English – Functional Skills or GCSEs at the right level for you.

Vocational option – You will have the opportunity to get hands-on and try out other subject areas in College such as: Animal Care, Catering, Childcare and Health, Digital Industries, eSports, Games, Hair and Beauty, Horticulture, Performing Arts and Public Services.

Mostly by assessment but some learners may take examinations in English and Maths.

You will require a ring binder and pens.

How much does the course cost?

This course is free.

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
