When and how will I study?
The specific days you will be required to attend vary depending on which particular group you join, but as a general rule, evening classes involve 3 hours study per week 9am-12pm on Tuesdays. 5-8pm on Wednesdays.
What subject areas will I study?
You will study the following areas:
- Effective communication through speaking and listening
- The ability to read with insight, distinguish between fact and opinion, follow an argument and understand how writers use language to achieve effect
- The ability to organise your ideas and to communicate clearly through writing
- The use of accurate spelling and punctuation
What equipment will I need?
You will be required to provide file paper and writing equipment. It is possible that you may need to obtain copies of certain texts, although these can usually be borrowed from the Learning Resource Centre if you do not want to purchase them. Some coursework assignments can be word processed if you wish.
How will I be assessed?
The syllabus that you will be required to study is the Assessment and Qualification Alliance (AQA) GCSE English, which involves the following:
Producing 5 pieces of written coursework, as follows:
1. Personal writing – fiction
2. Personal writing – non-fiction
3. A written response to a Shakespeare play 20% of marks
4. A written response to an author published before 1900
5. A written response to an author published after 1900
Speaking and listening – a range of speaking and literary activities are undertaken during the programme. The following contexts are included:
- Group discussion
- Paired discussion 20% of marks
- Individual talk
Written Examination – two examinations are taken. 30% of marks per paper
Both papers require you to answer 3 questions on both prepared and unseen material.
It is possible to take the examination at either Foundation or Higher Tier Level.The examinations are usually sat in June, although it is possible to take them in November under certain circumstances.
What qualification might I achieve?
English GCSE (AQA). If you study at Foundation Tier Level, you could achieve a grade in the C-G range. If you study at Higher Tier Level, you could achieve a grade in the A*-D range.
Where can I go from here?
On completion of this programme, you may wish to progress to study English AS Level. GCSE English Language is a basic qualification for a wide variety of possible jobs and career options.

Tuition Fees : £250 .There is fee remission available on this course
Full-time Barnsley College student’s 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.
