Course Content

You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1
The AS Geography course is divided into two sections - Physical & Human Geography. In Physical Geography a core unit on Rivers and Flood Management is studied together with another unit in Coastal Environments. In Human Geography a core unit on Population is studied with another unit in Health Issues.

Integral to both Physical and Human Geography sections are the use and development of a variety of geographical skills ie Applied Geography.

Year 2
The A2 Geography course is divided into two sections - Contemporary Issues in Physical Geography and Contemporary Issues in Human Geography.

In Physical Geography units cover plate tectonics, together with their associated hazards. In Human Geography the focus is on urbanisation and development and globalisation. Knowledge and understanding of the subject areas will be developed and extended through fieldwork. This will be assessed through a geographical issue evaluation.

What can I do next? Students have entered a wide range of degree courses, as well as progressing to directly linked courses in Geography, Geology and Environmental Sciences. Students have also used Geography as a qualification for entry to Law, Management Sciences, Business, Architecture, Medicine and Veterinary courses. Careers include: Environment Agent, Exploration, Geologist, Mapping, Nuclear Industries and Wildlife Conservation.
