Entry requirements

GCSE English and maths at grade E/3 or above is desirable but not essential, as Functional Skills is delivered as part of the apprenticeship programme.

You will achieve

Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science (Standard).

Course overview

A Healthcare Science Assistant works within hospitals, general practice and other settings in the healthcare sector and across all areas of healthcare science.

You will perform a range of low risk, routine technical and scientific procedures usually within one broad area of Healthcare Science. You may be required to undertake duties which may include basic life support; preparation of the environment for Healthcare Scientist procedures; production of reliable data; keeping accurate records; stock control of equipment and consumables; and inputting and retrieving patient data.

Course content

  • Healthcare science principles and practices
  • Understanding of person-centred care
  • Carrying out routine HCS duties such as basic life support
  • Infection prevention and control including handling hazardous materials
  • Working under supervision within a team to agreed operating standards
  • Health and safety law, policies and practices relevant to healthcare

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

You will need access to a mobile phone, internet, laptop or mobile tablet.

You will study within the workplace and may have to attend classes at Barnsley College’s Sci-Tech Centre, Falcon Street, Barnsley, S70 2EY.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship you will be a competent and job-ready Healthcare Scientist. Progression to Levels 4, 5 and 6 qualifications related to your job role is an option after a period of working and gaining experience. You may be able to work towards a Senior Healthcare Scientist role.

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
