What subject areas will I study?
The areas of study are:
Introduction to Animal Biology – This unit introduces you to the basic concepts in biology related to animal care. It considers the characteristics of living things, cell structure and animal diversity. It also explores the systems of the body and how heritable characteristics are passed to the next generation.
Animal Health, Welfare and Behaviour – This unit explores the importance of responsible pet ownership including welfare considerations for domestic animals, legislation, recognition of the signs of normal behaviour and causes of abnormal behaviour and communication. There is an introduction to the principles of first aid for common injuries.
Animal Accommodation Handling and Care- This unit provides an introduction to the essentials of animal care. It covers the safe approach and handling of animals, requirements for their accommodation, dietary and everyday needs. Learners will also study health and safety, transport and behaviour of a range of animals.
Work Related Experience - This unit is designed to develop important knowledge and skills relating to employment in the animal care industry. Learners on the First Diploma are required to undertake one day per week at a work placement throughout the programme, they are also to record practical’s which are carried out and witnessed by their tutor.
Animal Care Industry and Organisations- This unit provides an understanding of the different types of organisations in the animal care industry, their characteristics and influences. Different industries studied in this unit are animal nursing, grooming, pet shops, zoos, kennels and catteries and other service industries. The role of sustainable development is also considered and the businesses legal and ethical obligations in this area.
Animal Breeds and Grooming – This unit enables the learner to identify the different breeds of small animals and the important parts of responsible pet ownership. The learners will be able to recognise the different coat types of animals and day to day grooming requirements. Part of the unit content also covers the breed societies in the animal care industry and their roles and responsibilities.
What equipment will I need?
You will need protective clothing and footwear.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is by a series of EDEXCEL assignments. There is no formal end examination.

Level 2 in Animal Care
Where can I go from here?
On completion of this programme, you may wish to progress on to further study such as the extended Diploma in Animal Management which is available at Barnsley College. Alternatively you may wish to pursue employment in the animal care industry.
16 – 18 year olds
Full-time Barnsley College student’s 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees unless the course is listed as FULL FEE PAYABLE.
