Course Content
You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.
Year 1
Unit 1:Law Making and the Legal System: An examination of Parliamentary law-making and how judges can develop and create law through their interpretation of Acts of Parliament and the ways in which they decide cases.
An introduction to the courts and people who work in the legal system, including lawyers, magistrates, juries and judges. There will be opportunities to visit Barnsley Magistrates' Court.
Unit 2: The Concept of Liability: An introduction to principles of criminal law, including the law of assault, the tort of negligence, criminal and civil court procedure, sentencing and damages.
Year 2
Unit 3: Criminal Law: The law of homicide (murder and manslaughter), the non-fatal offences (assault, battery, abh, gbh) and potential defences e.g. intoxication, insanity and self-defence.
Unit 4: Tort Law plus Concepts of Law: Tort law (negligence, nuisance, occupiers' liability, defences and remedies such as damages and injunctions). Concepts of law involves relating knowledge of law and the legal system gained throughout the course to concepts such as morality, justice, fault and judicial creativity.
Assessment
Assessment is through external examinations (one exam per unit) which are taken in January and May/June each year.
Progression
Most learners progress to university to study a wide variety of degree courses including Law (with suitable combinations of A Level subjects). Other career options could include the Police, Accountancy, the Probation Service and qualifying as a legal executive through the ILEX route.
