There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but learners will need to be at least 18 years of age. It is recommended that you hold a level 3 qualification in the related area.
Students will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme.

Where, When and how will I study?
Learners can usually complete in 1 year. You will be given a named assessor who will assess you in the workplace on a regular basis throughout the course. Tasks will be set for you to complete based on knowledge evidence linked to each individual unit.
Appointment sessions will be available in college and work placement for guidance & support and professional discussions to monitor progress.
What subject areas will I study?
The qualification provides learners with skills and knowledge needed to manage and lead others in adult health and social care provision or in children and young people’s services.
There are six pathways – three are for those working with adults and three for those working with children and young people, covering a wide range of topics which include:
- Safeguarding and protection
- Managing care services
- Supporting development and partnership working
- Contributing to broader activities such as change programmes and recruitment
- Complying with quality systems and continuously
- Developing and carrying out policy
- Care management
The Management pathways are suitable for Assistant Managers and Deputy Managers working in day or domiciliary services who are wanting to progress their career.
The Residential services pathways are aimed at learners in a similar job role to the Management pathways but focus more on management and care in residential settings.
The Advanced Practice pathways are for senior practitioners who want to develop their career but wish to remain active practitioners within the management framework.
What equipment will I need?
You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets. A copy of the standard handbook will be provided and given to you by your assessor on the first visit.
How will I be assessed?
You will need to complete an Initial Assessment of Numeracy and Literacy before enrolling to the programme. Assessment is work based and continuous throughout the programme in the work setting. You will produce a portfolio of evidence with various methods of assessment.

Learners will need to be working or on practical placement as they need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.
