Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language and Maths must be a Grade B or above)

    plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work

Course Content

You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1
Core Mathematics 1- Indices and surds, polynomials, co-ordinate geometry and graphs, calculus (differentiation). A high level of manipulative algebraic skills are developed.
Core Mathematics 2- Trigonometry, sequences and series, algebra, calculus (integration). A high level of manipulative algebra skills are developed.
Probability and Statistics 1- Representation of data, probability, discrete random variables, bivariate data.

Year 2
Core Mathematics 3- Algebra and functions, trigonometry, differentiation and integration and numerical methods. A high level of manipulative algebraic skills are developed.
Core Mathematics 4- Algebra and graphs, differentiation and integration, first order differential equations and vectors. A high level of manipulative algebraic skills are developed. and either

Decision Mathematics 1- Algorithms, graph theory, networks and linear programming

Mechanics 1- Force as a vector, equilibrium of a particle, kinematics of motion in a straight line, Newton's laws of motion, linear momentum.

Assessment

Assessment is by examination only.

Progression

It is possible to progress to good universities to study for a degree in Maths (either on its own or part of a joint degree). It is also possible to use A Level Maths as an entry to a wide range of other degree subjects. Careers include: Engineer, Teacher and Science related professions.

What subjects can I study with this course?

Many students choose to take Maths along with other science A Levels, as there are many areas where these subjects overlap. However Maths can be combined with any subject.
