Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language and Music

    plus Instrumentalists/Vocalists should preferably have ABRSM (or equivalent) Grade 5

    plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work

Course Content

You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1
This course provides you with the opportunities to practice performance skills in solo and/or ensemble work, compose music in styles of your own choice and learn about the basics of harmony. At AS Level there are units in performance, composing, listening and understanding.

Areas of study include: Instrumental Music, Vocal Music and Applied Music. In your first year you will complete a number of performances, compose music to a given brief, study and analyse the scores of set pieces of work and develop skills in harmony.

Year 2
At A2 Level you will:
• Complete extensive performances, both solo and ensemble
• Create a portfolio of compositions
• Work on technical studies including Baroque counterpoint, Minuet for string quartets, themes and variations or popular song

You will develop an understanding of aural analysis, music in context and continuity and change in instrumental music.
You will be expected to bring your own instrument(s) to class.

Progression

The majority of musicians continue music to a higher level either at university or at a specialist music college. Teaching at all levels is also a popular career path.

What subjects can I study with this course?

Musicians can study a wide range of other subjects, including Drama and Theatre Studies, Dance and Art and Design.
