Music Technology A Level

- 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language
plus The ability to play an instrument to a reasonable standard and the ability to read standard music notation
plus You will be required to pass an audition
Course Content
You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.
Year 1
This course covers aspects of MIDI sequencing, sampling, studio recording and production, composing and the history of all genres of music.
The course will develop industry skills and techniques used in modern music production. All students, including those who do not play a traditional instrument, are encouraged to explore their musicality and create original material using technology.
Year 2
The Principles and Practice of Music Technology: This involves the study and practice of MIDI sequencing, audio sequencing and recording. Each of these activities demands use of appropriate equipment and technical processes to capture sounds and manipulate them to produce musical results.
Popular Music Styles since 1910: The main musical and cultural characteristics of the major styles and trends of the past 100 years. In studying the various genres and styles, students are expected to have an understanding of relevant musical theory and terminology (in addition to technological terms and concepts).
The Development of Technology based Music: This area of study promotes an understanding of the development and influence of technology on music since 1910. This includes instruments involving music technology, recording practice and related developments in contemporary music.
Assessment
Assessment is through a range of task assignments to create a portfolio of work and end-of-year examination. Students will be expected to bring their own instrument(s) to class.
Progression
Music technology students often progress to university and careers include: Studio and Live Sound Engineer, Producer, Music and Sound for TV and Radio.
What subjects can I study with this course?
Music Technology complements a number of A Levels. Due to the course content including music theory, analysis and discrimination, students who study music will benefit from it.
