Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade A* to C including English Language, Maths (Mathsmust be Grade B or above) and Science (details below)

    either GCSE Physics at Grade C or above

    or GCSE Core and Additional Science at Grade BB or above

    please note GCSE Applied Science or BTEC First Diploma Applied Science will not be accepted on this course but is accepted on the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science)

    plus Students must study AS Level Mathematics or AS Level Use of Mathematics alongside AS Level Physics

    plus Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work

Course Content

You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1
Mechanics: Motion, Forces in Action, Work and Energy
Electrons, Waves and Photons: Electrical Current, Resistance and DC circuits, Waves and Wave Properties, Introduction to Quantum Physics
Practical Skills in Physics 1: Internal assessment of specific practical skills using OCR set tasks.

Year 2
• Newtonian World: Newton's Laws and Momentum, Circular Motion and Oscillations, Thermal Physics.
Fields, particles and Frontiers of Physics: Electric and Magnetic Fields, Capacitors and Exponential Decay, Nuclear Physics, Medical Imaging, Modelling the Universe.
Practical Skills in Physics 2: Internal assessment of specific practical skills using OCR set tasks.

Examination and internal assessment of practical skills

Progression

Studying Physics can be a springboard to a number of careers and students can progress to study Astronomy, Dentistry, Engineering, Forensic Science, Medicine, Sound Recording, Veterinary Science and Finance.
