Course Content

You gain an AS level after successfully completing Year 1, you will be awarded a full A level after successfully completing Year 2.

Year 1
Unit 1: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity - How do our gender, social class, age and ethnic origin influence the formation of our identities? Is it nature or nurture that makes us the individuals we are? How strong is the evidence that supports these ideas? This unit attempts to explore and answer the above questions.

You will also study sociological research skills as part of this unit. Assessment for this unit is by external examination.

Unit 2: Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity
The themes in Unit 1 above are developed through the in-depth study of one of the following topics: Sociology of the Family or the Sociology of Youth. This unit explores the influences of these themes on the attitudes, values and social experiences of both individuals and society.

Year 2
Unit 1: Power and Control -The themes of power and control in society are studied in depth in this unit. Subject options are: Sociology of crime or Sociology of the mass media

Unit 2: Exploring Social Inequality and Difference -This unit builds on the knowledge and understanding developed throughout the course and explores the core themes in sociology such as power, social inequality, culture and identity. You will also develop higher level sociological research skills as part of this unit.
