What subject areas will I study?
These courses consist of hands-on use of word processing Word software, in addition to the revision of basic functions.
- Stage 1 – correct use of keyboard, layout of paragraphs, letters, memos, reports and unruled table using basic word processing functions such as: inserting/deleting text; indenting text; changing line length; changing margins; justification of text; indenting text; changing line spacing; centering text horizontally/vertically and use of page breaks.
- Stage 2 – building on the above knowledge and increasing speed of production by the use of more advanced functions such as: headers and footers; multi-page documents; sorting of text within an unruled table; glossaries; finding and replacing and the routing of documents.
- Stage 3 – building on the above knowledge and increasing speed of production by the use of advanced functions such as: footnotes; inserting specified text from other files; text boxes; column work; ruled tables; decimal tabulation and correction of unmarked grammatical errors.
What equipment will I need?
You will be required to provide your own writing materials and folder.
How will I be assessed?
You will undertake varied exercises throughout the course, which will be graded to assess each stage of learning. You will also take two final examinations at the end of the course. NB These examinations will be during the day and not in the evening. You should not book holidays when external assessments are due to take place. (Please speak to your tutor if in doubt).
What qualifications might I achieve?
Depending on the stage followed, you may achieve:
- Oxford, Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Text Processing Certificate Stage 1 (Basic)
- OCR Text Processing Certificate Stage 2 (Intermediate)
- OCR Text Processing Certificate Stage 3 (Advanced)
PLEASE NOTE – The College can withhold examination certificates if debts are outstanding.
Where can I go from here?
On successful completion of the course you may wish to progress onto a course in audio transcription, shorthand transcription or an IT course at an appropriate level.
