What subject areas will I study?
The programme consists of a mixture of mandatory and optional units as follows:
Mandatory Core Units
- Know how to carry out safe working practises in construction
- Carry out safe practices in construction
- Knowledge of information, quantities and communicating with others
- Information, quantities and communicating with others
- Knowledge of building methods and construction technology
- Building methods and construction technology
- Knowledge of basic woodworking
- Produce basic woodworking joints
- Know how to maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
- Maintain and use carpentry and tools
- Know how to prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
- Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
- Construct an external inspection hatch
Plus
Option List A (select 2 Units)
- Install finishing components (vertical and horizontal)
- Install structural fabric components (access, divisional and protective)
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the programme, practical work and related job knowledge are studied and accredited on a unit basis towards gaining a Construction Diploma Level 2 in their chosen craft. Achieving a construction Diploma for a particular skill or trade requires the candidate to demonstrate satisfactorily to an assessor that he or she is able to carry out the necessary tasks to a standard that is acceptable to the industry.

Where can I go from here?
On completion of this programme, you may wish to progress onto Joinery Apprenticeship NVQ Level 3, or a Wood Occupations Diploma Level 3 which is available at the College.
16 – 18 year olds
Full-time Barnsley College student’s 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees unless the course is listed as FULL FEE PAYABLE.
19+ Students
