Employers flock to College for job fair

Cllr Kevin Osborne at the Job Fair

The College has helped employers from across the borough connect with those seeking employment as part of a recruitment drive through Jobcentre Plus.

More than 25 businesses were on hand to discuss current vacancies, skills and requirements across sectors such as logistics, care, manufacturing and retail. Councillor Kevin Osborne, Cabinet Support Member for Place, Regeneration and Culture also attended the event held at the College’s Old Mill Lane campus, to champion the council’s adult skills agenda.

Councillor Kevin Osborne, Cabinet Support Member for Place, Regeneration and Culture, said: “It was great to visit the jobs fair and speak with employers and jobseekers.  It’s clear there is a demand for events such as this; it places employment, education and training directly in front of those that need it. Barnsley is truly a place of opportunities.”

Event organisers, Jobcentre Plus, brought together some of the borough’s leading employers including British Army, GXO, Aldi, and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

As well as the opportunity for exhibitors to meet potential new employees, the day was also a valuable networking exercise, giving businesses the chance to discuss current recruitment challenges to understand how they could work together more closely in the future.

Helen Weatherston, Director of Business Development at Barnsley College, added: “It is important that we open our doors to the local community and host events such as this, which enable those seeking employment to connect with national and local businesses offering fantastic opportunities here in Barnsley. Our purpose as a College is to transform lives, not only for our students, but also for those who live and work in our town.”
