Excellence Awards 2024: Nominations

Our Excellence Awards are back for 2024!

And you’re in the perfect place to nominate that student you think is one-in-a-million and deserves to be recognised for their achievements.

With plenty of categories launching this year, including some you won’t have seen before, make sure you read the information below carefully.

You can nominate into more than one category – pay attention to who the nominations are open to as some are quite specific!

Categories open for students to nominate into:

Student of the Year Awards (nominated by students only) 

 These nominations are only open to students.

A student who has been involved in College life and through their participation has made a real difference to the lives of others. This could be through helping other students either academically or socially or involvement in College events.

Please encourage your students to nominate into the above category. They can submit a nomination by visiting: Student Nomination Page 

 

Categories open for staff to nominate into:

Student of the Year Award – Across 14 – 16 students only

 This category is only open to 14-16 students.

A student who has been involved in College life and through their participation has made a real difference to the lives of others/ This could be through helping other students either academically or socially or involvement in College events.

Apprentice of the Year Award – Across BC and HE  

The nominee must be working towards an apprenticeship programme. They will have made an exceptional contribution to their workplace and b a valued member of the team they work within.

Achievements in everyday life are also taken into consideration, for example community activities.

Fusion Arts Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award is for students who have made a significant contribution to The Arts whilst at College. Their efforts may be recognised across a variety of subjects within our Creative departments.

Barnsley Heritage & Museum Trust (BHMT) Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award is for students who have made a significant contribution to Culture whilst at College.

Equality and Diversity Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award is for students who champion equality and diversity across College. This might be though involvement with a society or through students in a non-traditional industry (e.g. females in Engineering, males in Hair and Beauty etc.)

Enterprise Achievement Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award recognises a student who has shown a passion for developing an idea and has successfully completed an enterprise project within their course or has started their own business whilst at College.

The winner of this award will be a student who has used their initiative and shown determination and creativity throughout an enterprise project.

Overcoming Adversity Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award recognises a student who has achieved well at College despite barriers to their learning (this could be health problems, issues at home or with family, learning or physical difficulties).

Progression Award – Across BC and HE

This award is for students who have secured a significant progression destination across College and/or Higher Education. This progression could be within College to a higher level qualification or outside of College into employment or traineeship.

Societies’ Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award is for a student or society who deserves to be recognised for their considerable contribution to the progression of student learning, career development and student experience.

The winning student or society will run in or be part of, an exciting and inclusive society which enhances the student experience.

Student Voice Representative Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award recognises a Student Voice Representative who has gone above and beyond to develop and enhance the student experience and develop improvements to their course. The winner will have managed to successfully resolve issues students have raised with them, introduces an innovative change or gone above and beyond in representing students.

Townend Tribute Award – Across BC and BSFC

This category is only open to students with higher and/or additional needs or those who holds an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

This award recognises a student who has overcome exceptional barriers so they can succeed on their College course and achieve their aspirations. The award honours Jeff Townend, the Commissioner from Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC) who was responsible for working in partnership with College to secure funding to support high needs students.

Sadly, Jeff died suddenly of pancreatic cancer in 2018.

Sustainability Award – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award goes to the student who has shown the greatest commitment to the sustainable future of our planet. On their course, across the wider college or as part of their life outside of education, this student is making a significant contribution to creating a brighter future for us all.

Frank Johnston Award 

This award recognises outstanding achievement in Public Services. The students nominated into this category will be highly involved in College life and will stand out from the crowd as a great students.

All nominees must have completed the course in the 2022/23 academic year.

This category is only open to nominations from Public Services staff. For more information, contact Jazz Saroya

 

Categories open for external partners to nominate into:

Talent United Award (nominated by TU partners only) – Across BC, BSFC and HE

This award recognises a student who has demonstrated outstanding engagement with a Talent United partner. A student may have done this though workshops, talks, volunteering or visits and will have made a real impression on Talent United partners. All nominees must have completed the engagement in the 2023/24 academic year.

Excellence Awards 2024 – External Nominations

 

Work Placement and Internship Award (nominated by employers only) – Across BC (FE and T Levels)

This award recognises a student who has participated in a work placement, volunteers or is working towards an apprenticeship. They must go the extra mile and have received outstanding feedback from their employer. All nominees must have completed the work placement in the 2023/24 academic year.

Categories not open for nomination:

Principal’s Award (selected by David Akeroyd)

The winner of this award will be chosen from the winners across all categories by the College’s Principal and CEO. 

Student of the Year Award (selected by the College’s Executive Team)

The winner of this award will be chosen from the winners across the Student of the Year categories by the College’s Executive Team.
