Communities Minister, Baroness Hanham, CBE visited the Think Low Carbon Centre on Thursday 16 February.

The £4.2m Centre, based at Barnsley College’s Honeywell site, demonstrates renewable energy in action and a range of energy-efficient methods and materials.

The Centre is a national knowledge hub; hosting practical demonstrations and seminars for construction professionals, tradespeople, householders and anyone who wants to know more about low carbon measures. The Think Low Carbon Centre is supported financially by the European Union and has attracted £2.75 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013. The remainder of the project is funded by the College.

Baroness Hanham is Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government and is the Minister with responsibility for the ERDF. The Minister undertook a tour of the building and met with the College Chair of Governors, Frank Johnston, College staff and local businesses that have benefited from working with the Centre.

Frank Johnston, Chair of Governors at Barnsley College said: “The Think Low Carbon Centre showcases the latest green technologies and construction methods for making buildings ultra-efficient.  Sustainable construction is a key sector for new "green jobs" and this Centre will be at the forefront of ensuring that businesses and trades people in South Yorkshire, and beyond are aware of the potential for these technologies and materials.”
