Presley Beckham

Presley Beckham, a determined and passionate student, started out in our Learning for Living and Work (LFLW) department and has progressed onto our Animal Management courses. He is now working towards completing an Animal Management Foundation Degree (FdSc). Presley’s experience speaks to the extensive support and education provided by the College.

College progression
On his experience through the College’s courses, Presley said: “It has been an experience progressing from Learning for Living and Work to Animal Care but the experience was a good one and not at all overwhelming like how I thought it would be.

“On my course, I enjoy learning more about animals. The support from the College has been generous, effective and all around helpful.”

One of his tutors, Tristan Greenwood praised Presley’s dedication to learning, stating: "Presley has shown remarkable commitment and an eagerness to learn new skills. His progress and openness to knowledge, especially in the farm setting, has been truly commendable."

College services
The College offers a wide range of student services to support learners academically, personally, and financially. These include Additional Learning Support for students with disabilities, financial aid through the Learner Support Fund, mental health and wellbeing services, and academic guidance like study-skills workshops and personal tutoring. The college also provides free bus services, travel support and more.

Presley, who has accessed some of these services said: “During my stay at the College, I have accessed the Learner Support Fund (LSF) and Additional Learning Support (ALS). The LSF has benefited me by allowing me to get food without needing to pay for it, instead using my money on other things.

“I travel to College using the public bus service, although I could use the free coach service if needed.”

“ALS supported me in learning the lesson materials, providing a tutor who helped explain things to me in a different way if I didn't understand it in the lesson.”

Future ambitions
Presley shared his aspirations for when he completes his Animal Management Foundation Degree (FdSC). He said: “After my course, I hope to get either an apprenticeship or job in the animal care industry, preferably as a zookeeper, maybe for exotic animals like snakes.”

Presley’s educational journey at the College has been enriching, with numerous takeaways that are expected to be beneficial in future career pursuits.

“I have learnt several things that I can take into my future choice, and all of them will be helpful when it comes to deciding what to do.”

Recommendation to prospective students
Presley recommends the College to others. He advices: “The services they offer here are great, the teaching is great also and is understandable most of the time, if it isn't, they are willing to explain it in a different way that they believe will be more helpful to you.

“To students thinking of studying at the College, get a travel plan, if you need to access travel services. Apply for the Learner Support Fund if possible as it is very helpful to have and can help with certain worries.”

Presley’s journey at the College is an example of how supportive services, quality education, and a welcoming environment can significantly enhance a student’s academic and personal growth.
