A Constructive Week of Insightful Sessions and Hands-on Learning

Posted: 06/03/2025

Project Search is a transition-to-work programme designed for individuals with disabilities. Currently, our Learning for Living and Work students are completing the programme at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. They have worked across various departments, from IT to Chemotherapy, completing their first rotations in September to December 2024 and now undertaking their second rotations.

Current rotation: Catering

Previous rotation: ENT and audiology

“With the catering team, I help sort racks, get rid of plates and make sure everything is nice and tidy. My tasks also include washing dishes, emptying bins, making sure utensils are ready and up to standard and restocking all the crisps, sandwiches and drinks.

“My favourite task is restocking the shelves. It is a nice and methodical task for me.

My confidence has grown in this role. I ask a lot more questions and I often ask staff if they need any help.”

Current rotation: Chemotherapy

Previous rotation: Children’s ward

“On my Chemotherapy rotation, I get to talk to patients, get them anything they need and take blood down to labs. I have really enjoyed getting to know all the patients and the team. I have gotten more confident and gotten to know everyone. I enjoy speaking with them and getting to visit different wards as well.

“The Chemotherapy team really appreciate my work. There has been an improvement in my teamwork and communication skills.

“One of my main tasks is ringing the pharmacy to get prescriptions I’ve been asked to get.”

Current rotation: Volunteering

Previous rotation: ISS Catering

“I enjoy my volunteering rotation. The staff and customers are always polite when I am making drinks and clearing tables and plates. I am gaining valuable work experience. On my previous rotation with ISS Catering, I handled the bins and cleaned tables.

“My current favourite tasks are serving customers. I used to be shy about doing it, but my communication skills have improved in this role and I am now happy to serve.”
