Public Services student Andrew Crooks has been chosen to represent the English Karate Alliance at the European Championships in Romania.
Andrew began his journey at his local karate club where he recognised his love for the sport and found he had the ability to compete at world competition level. The 17-year-old moved up through the grades and gained recognition from the English Karate Alliance governing body.
Andrew will compete against some of the best karate fighters on the international circuit. To prepare for the competition he has a gruelling daily training routine, with a five hour training session in the evening after his studies at College.
Andrew is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and has access to an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund equipment and travel.
Andrew of Gawber, said: “I’m looking forward to competing in a prestigious international event and gaining experience from it. I’m currently the European Champion for my age and weight so this will be a great test of my abilities.
“The College understands the demands to compete at a higher level and the support I have received has really helped me to pursue my goals in karate.”
Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football (male and female), Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing and Individual Athlete Academy.
