Annie’s story of resilience, dedication, and teaching excellence
Posted: 18/06/2025
Annie Starkie, a profoundly deaf apprentice educator, has achieved a remarkable milestone by completing her Level 5 Teaching and Skills apprenticeship six months ahead of schedule, earning a well-deserved Distinction.
Since beginning her journey in January 2024, Annie has overcome significant challenges associated with her deafness but rather than allowing this to hinder her, she turned it into a source of strength. With unwavering dedication and the support of her interpreter and mentor, Annie embraced every learning opportunity, showing how perseverance can break through even the toughest barriers.
Balancing a job alongside her studies, Annie never missed a session, never complained, and consistently supported her peers by bringing her unique insight into inclusive teaching practices. By incorporating visual learning methods, British Sign Language (BSL), and accessible tools such as subtitles, Annie created a classroom where all students could thrive.

She said: “Being a member of the deaf community has shaped my entire approach to teaching; it’s not just about communicating differently, it's about ensuring every student feels seen, heard, and supported.”
Among her many proud moments, Annie recalls the day she received the news of her Distinction over a video call from Higher Education Pathway Leader Emma Gaskell.
She added: “It was a shock to achieve a distinction because at the start of the Apprenticeship I thought I would be happy with a pass as it seemed a difficult road ahead. However, with the support from College and by using my Interpreter Sue, I realised that gaining a distinction was achievable."
Her journey has not only led to personal triumph but also inspired institutional change, fostering a more inclusive environment where diversity is championed, and accessibility is prioritised.
She commented: “I hope my story encourages others to recognise their own potential. Having English as a second language or facing additional challenges doesn’t have to hold you back. With the right support and mindset, anything is possible.”
Now, with her dream of graduation fulfilled, Annie is setting her sights even higher, hoping to gain Qualified Teacher Status and one day teach Maths, alongside her current work teaching BSL.
Her message to others is simple, yet powerful: “Set your mind to it. Don’t let barriers hold you back. Take things one step at a time and believe in yourself.”
