Local employers were invited to talk with students about career opportunities and apprenticeships at Barnsley College’s ‘Your Future Careers’ Event on Tuesday 24 November.
The event was held in collaboration with Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and aimed to engage students about apprenticeships and their future careers.
Dominic Beck, Corporate Affairs Manager at Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted to be able to work with Barnsley College, one of the Chamber’s key partners in Barnsley, to promote careers and inspire the future workforce through the Your Future programme. We are already thinking of how we can build upon the successes of this most recent event, which was a resounding success.”
Over 400 students attended the event. They had the opportunity to talk to employers about the current economic climate, what apprenticeships are available to them in the local area, and what the benefits of studying on an apprenticeship were.
They were also encouraged to register with the National Apprenticeship Service website where they can access traineeship and apprenticeship vacancies online, look at what’s available and make an informed choice before applying.
Amongst the employers attending were NPS Barnsley, Keepmoat, Linwood Park, Barnsley Hospice, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services, and MKB Solicitors LLP; who work closely with the college by employing a number of apprentices, offering traineeship opportunities and providing work experience for our full time students to support them in developing employability skills.
Ben McFeely, Employment Solicitor from MKB Solicitors, said: “Events like this are great to make first contact with students and introduce them to what we offer.
“We work with Barnsley College to offer apprenticeships and also work placement schemes that, hopefully, inspire students to pursue a future career in law.”
Terry Johnson, Strategic Asset Manager from NPS Barnsley, said: “Apprentices make up around four percent of our workforce, and by working with education providers like Barnsley College we have been able to attract many talented young people to the company.”
