The new Premdor Academy was officially launched at a special event held at the College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre on Old Mill Lane. Guests had the opportunity to find out more about this new partnership between the College and Premdor, which will provide our students with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge within engineering and manufacturing.
The launch event began with a welcome by Chris Clifford, Head of C-STEM at Barnsley College, Gavin Day, UK Organisational Development Manager at Premdor and Yiannis Koursis, Deputy Principal at Barnsley College. They explained how the partnership will bring education and industry together and how Premdor and the College will work collectively to tailor the curriculum to develop the skills and knowledge of our students. This will provide Premdor with a stream of talented individuals who are equipped with the exact skills that Premdor are looking for and address the skills shortage within the industry.
Gavin explained further how this opportunity to work with the College will help secure the future workforce of Premdor. He said: “Students will essentially go through a ‘two year interview’ where they will be constantly trained and observed to ensure that they are ‘work ready’. Successful students will be guaranteed a job with Premdor at the end of their course.”
Guests were then provided with a demonstration of Microsoft HaloLens, a virtual reality holographic computer software program that Premdor Academy students will have access to. This software will allow students to engage with digital content and interact with holograms in the world around them. This technology is becoming increasingly popular within the engineering industry and consequently will provide Premdor Academy students with further experience of what employers are looking for.
The event concluded with an official ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a tour of the Academy.
Gavin Day said: “The purpose of the Premdor Academy is to bring business and education together and provide great career opportunities for people in the Barnsley area. From a business perspective, we also want to develop a highly skilled, motivated and engaged future workforce to maintain our strong position in the industry. The Premdor Academy, in partnership with Barnsley College, will help us to achieve this.”
Chris Clifford added: “Academies are a fantastic opportunity for students to develop the exact skills, training and knowledge that employers are looking for. We are looking forward to working with Premdor and ensuring that our students leave College with the skills required for a successful career within engineering and manufacturing.”
