Barnsley College has become the newest Patron of the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

The College will work with the Chamber to support the development of its students to help meet the needs of local businesses and to address the skills agenda for the South Yorkshire region.

This new partnership will help to ensure students are leaving College equipped with the skills that employers are looking for and provide the local economy with talented individuals who are ready to enter the world of work.

The College is looking to achieve this through a number of initiatives which include developing academies with local employers to bring together business and education, arranging events at the College where current students will get the chance to meet and speak to local businesses and providing more work experience opportunities.

The College will also be helping businesses to enhance the skills of their current workforce by providing training opportunities including free Microsoft Office courses and literacy and numeracy refresher courses.

Offering full-time and part-time courses and apprenticeships in a range of subjects from entry level to degree level, the College is open to anyone who is wanting to study a qualification or improve their current skills.

Yiannis Koursis, Deputy Principal at Barnsley College, said: “Arguably one of the greatest challenges facing every business is recruiting the right members of staff to help them achieve their own growth ambitions. We collaboratively work alongside businesses based throughout South Yorkshire and becoming a patron member of the Chamber reflects our commitment to forging stronger links with the local business community.

“As a Patron we hope to be able to work more closely with local businesses, enabling us to help overcome skills barriers within the local economy, whilst helping to equip the next generation with the vital skills and knowledge to succeed in their future careers.”

Andrew Denniff, Chief Executive at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, added: “We have enjoyed a good relationship with the College for many years and them becoming a Patron really enhances that partnership. Together we can work closely with local businesses and help youngsters entering the workplace for the first time to engage with local employers.”
