We hosted a highly successful Volunteer Fair at our Old Mill Lane campus, providing students with an exciting opportunity to connect with over 15 local charities and explore volunteer roles within the community.

The event, organised by our Enterprise department in collaboration with Barnsley Community and Voluntary Services (CVS), attracted students from across the College who were eager to engage with organisations that are making a significant impact in the local area.

A range of organisations, from health and wellbeing services to environmental initiatives, set up stalls offering valuable information and guidance on the variety of volunteer opportunities available across the borough.

With a focus on giving back to the community, the fair highlighted the importance of volunteering for personal development, career growth, and making a positive local impact.

Students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from each charity, ask questions, and learn about the different ways they could contribute.

Charities in attendance included NHS Trust, Barnsley Hospice, Another Way Climate Change, Barnsley City of Sanctuary, Refugee Council, BIADS, Age UK, Barnsley Scouts, Twiggs, Deaf Awareness, Open Country, Barnsley Council, Resolute Women’s Services, MND Association, Barnsley CAB, Conservation Volunteers, and Barnsley CVS.

Karen Dennis, Volunteer Coordinator at Barnsley CVS, said: “We were very pleased to collaborate on this event to promote the benefits of volunteering to Barnsley College students.

“Volunteering is a chance for students to get away from the daily routine of lectures and studying, meet new people in a new environment and gain a sense of accomplishment and pride by contributing to the local community.”

Lucy Evans, Barnsley College Cultural Capital and Personal Development Coordinator, who organised the event, added: “We are excited to work with Barnsley CVS to bring this event to life as volunteering offers our students an incredible opportunity to develop essential skills, gain valuable work experience, and enhance their college journey.

“It has been inspiring to witness the passion our students have for creating positive change, and we hope today’s fair motivates many to take the next step in securing volunteering positions and enriching their overall experience at college by getting involved with these wonderful local charities.”
