We are celebrating winning the ‘Most Creative Cart’ in the first Soapbox Derby organised by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The college’s entry, Fireman Sam and the Extinguishers, was one of 37 carts who battled it out before 3,500 spectators at the event on Saturday 1 October at Clifton Park, Rotherham.

Steve Willmer, Tutorial Learning Mentor in the Business, Warehousing and Logistics department at Barnsley College said: “It was great to be involved with this fun event and winning this award is a fantastic end to a really enjoyable day.

“We had tremendous support from the local business community, including Travis Perkins who donated materials and resources to help build the cart and South Yorkshire Fire Service who loaned uniforms for the team to wear at the race.

“In addition students studying Accountancy, Business, IT and Travel and Tourism have completed five charity walks and have raised over £650 for the Hospice. This is an amazing achievement and we’re hoping to get involved with the Soapbox Derby next year.”
