Childcare and Health students had the exciting opportunity to engage with industry professionals at our Childcare and Health Career Fair, held as part of National Careers Week.
Through these interactive sessions and discussions, students gained a clearer understanding of the qualifications, skills, and experiences needed to succeed in their chosen fields.
The event provided students with valuable insights into potential career paths, allowing them to connect directly with experts from various sectors.
Representatives from leading institutions and organisations, including the University of Salford, Provide Education, Leeds Trinity University, CER Education, Age UK Barnsley, and Proud to Care Barnsley, shared their expertise, advice, and opportunities available within the health and childcare industries.
The Careers and Enterprise Hub, Barnsley College Enterprising Futures, Barnsley College University Centre, and current staff who shared their experiences from their time in the industry, were also present to speak to students.
Macie Oates, Level 3 Health and Social Care student, said: “The careers fair was really helpful in guiding me toward the career path I want to pursue in the future as the stalls provided valuable information about different options and the steps needed to take them.
“A highlight of the event was speaking with Age UK Barnsley, who offered me a volunteer position; I could take on roles such as a Befriender, Telephone Befriender, shop assistant, or GAP assistant. This opportunity will be a great addition to my CV and will support my journey toward a career in nursing.”
The event aimed to inspire confidence and ambition, equipping students with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their future careers.
Wendy Shaw, Proud to Care Officer for Proud to Care Barnsley, who attended the event, said: “It was lovely to take part in the careers event at Barnsley College on Tuesday, and the Proud to Care Hub appreciates being invited. It was great to speak with students who feel that further study is not for them and wish to enter employment within the care industry.
“The Proud to Care Hub is there to support young people, such as these Barnsley College students, into employment with the wraparound support of a King’s Trust pastoral mentor. We understand that further study is not for everyone, so it is fantastic to spread the word about the work of the Hub and how we can support Barnsley’s young people.”
Stuart Prentice, Childcare and Health Programme Manager, commented: “Through these interactive sessions and discussions, students gained a clearer understanding of the qualifications, skills, and experiences needed to succeed in their chosen fields.
“We sincerely thank all our partners for their invaluable support in guiding and motivating our students; their involvement has played a crucial role in empowering the next generation of health and childcare professionals.”
