Barnsley College has been nominated for Provider of the Year at the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Apprenticeship Awards 2021.

The SCR Apprenticeship Awards is an annual event held to celebrate apprentices, employers and training providers across South Yorkshire. The Provider of the Year Award is sponsored by education charity NOCN Group.

Through their nomination, the College has proved that it works with a range of employers to offer quality training courses. It has also demonstrated ways in which apprentices can gain qualifications and develop key skills through their schemes.

Three apprentices from the College’s Business department have also been shortlisted for awards. Joe Cartwright and Dominic Blood, two Level 3 Business Administration Apprentices who work at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, have been nominated in the Health and Public Service Apprenticeship Award category.

Kallum Frost, a Level 2 Business and Administration Apprentice currently working for Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, has also been shortlisted for the COVID Hero Award.

Yiannis Koursis, Principal and Chief Executive, at Barnsley College, said: “We are so pleased to have been nominated for this prestigious award, which highlights our ongoing dedication to boosting employability and vocational education in the local region.

“Our shortlisting, both as a College and through our fantastic apprentices, is a testament to our tutors and teaching staff, who have worked tirelessly through challenging circumstances to ensure that our students have access to the knowledge they require and the opportunities they deserve.”

On the College’s Award entry, the award judges remarked: “There is a real focus on diversity. Particularly great is the support given to those from areas of deprivation, Women into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and promoting and supporting vital digital skills.”
