Barnsley College has led the nation’s colleges in commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day – bringing the Principal Lamp Light of Peace, used in the national commemorations, to Barnsley in a landmark moment for the region.
The Lamp Light of Peace, representing the triumph of peace over war, was blessed at St. Paul’s Cathedral during a televised VE Day service attended by the Royal Family, before making its journey up the Thames aboard the historic Havengore, famously used during Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral.
Lady Jane MacRae, who played bagpipes for the King during the national VE Day commemorations, delivered the Lamp Light of Peace to Barnsley College. It will go on to Balmoral before returning to Barnsley, once a permanent site has been decided upon.
The receipt of the Lamp Light of Peace followed the unveiling of a flagship Memorial Garden – a cornerstone of the VE Day 80 national campaign.

Members of the Royal British Legion and local Councillors were invited to speak and hold a minute’s silence as students and staff reflected on the Garden – one of a series across the country, planted in red, white and blue and symbolising resilience, peace and unity.
The Memorial Garden capped a series of activities and events putting Barnsley College at the heart of the national movement – sparked when the College launched the #VEHAPPY project, which has since crossed global borders.
On VE Day itself (Thursday 8 May), student-led activities created a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere, combining digital innovation with historical reflection – from VR experiences to creative writing, afternoon tea, period music and décor.
Barnsley College Principal and Chief Executive, David Akeroyd, said: “Bringing the Lamp Light of Peace to Barnsley is a hugely rewarding and inspiring moment, that reflects our College’s dedication to remembrance, heritage and values of peace and unity. It is very special for both the College and the town as a whole, to be entrusted with a significant piece of the national commemorations.
“I am immensely proud of our students for leading the nation’s colleges in the VE Day 80 campaign. That we’ve been able to bring the Lamp Light of Peace, launch the #VEHAPPY campaign, and create the Memorial Garden, here in Barnsley speaks volumes for both the College’s longstanding commitment to unity and collaboration, and our town’s strong community spirit.
“Days such as this are important for a number of reasons – they allow us to honour those who have come before us, reflect on the here and now, and think ahead to what we want to see in the world around us.”
Cllr Joe Hayward, Armed Forces Champion for Barnsley, spoke at the unveiling of the Memorial Garden and said: “I'm honoured to be part of the unveiling of the Memorial Garden at Barnsley College. The garden is a moving tribute to peace, unity, and those who fought and made sacrifices for us all.
“On this significant anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, it's important that we come together to not only celebrate the victory in the war, but to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought, and those who died, for our freedom.”
Barnsley College launched the #VEHAPPY campaign on Monday 7 April. A collaboration with Pageantmaster Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR, #VEHAPPY has seen people worldwide uploading selfies showing a ‘V for victory’ to create a digital mosaic of Winston Churchill at ve80.com/vehappy – technology supported by students from the College’s Creative and Digital Industries department.
Pageantmaster Bruno Peek said: “The work Barnsley College has created for VE Day 80 is truly remarkable. Their innovative approach, using digital technology to unite people worldwide, is a testament to the passion and hard work of these students. I could not be prouder of what they have accomplished.”
