College’s football team successful adventure abroad

Barnsley College’s Sports Academy returns home with another trophy from a prestigious international football competition in Spain.

The under-19 male team were undefeated throughout the German-founded Komm Mit International Whitsuntide Tournament in Catalonia, Spain, beating teams from Germany and Romania to secure a place in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the team were beaten 4-3 on penalties, however the students used their team spirit to beat Ludwieller, Germany, to secure third place and return home with a trophy.

Tom Toulson, 18, of Doncaster Road, a Sport student and captain of the football team, said: “We’ve had a couple of setbacks this season and a couple of defeats but we grouped together as a team, worked hard to pick ourselves up and achieved good results abroad.”

Luke Forgione, Performance and Athlete Development Coach at Barnsley College, added: “The tournament was a huge success, and the students loved the opportunity and experience gained from it. The performances from the team were outstanding throughout the tournament, considering the heat and number of games played during the four days of competition.

“Hopefully we can go one step further next year and be crowned champions.”

Barnsley Sports Academy offers fantastic facilities and a team of expert and specialist coaches supporting talented sports performers in any discipline. Academies include Football (male and female), Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Refereeing, Cricket and Individual Athlete Academy.
