The Construction Skills Village in Barnsley is hosting an Open Event on Wednesday 28 June for those who are interested in working in construction.
The Skills Village is a collaboration between Henry Boot Construction, Northern Regeneration, Barnsley College and Barnsley Council and is a result of Barnsley Council’s £100m investment in the Better Barnsley town centre redevelopment.
“The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together for the benefit of our students”
The Construction Skills Village offers Level 1 courses in Brickwork, Groundworks and Joinery for young people aged between 16-18, as well as a construction based work academy for those aged 19 and over. Students will work on a ‘live’ site and gain first-hand experience of working on a construction build from design to finish. The site contains training areas where students work on a number of construction related activities providing them with practical industry experience and providing local and regional businesses with a stream of highly talented individuals.
Visitors to the Open Event will have the opportunity to find out more about the Skills Village, talk to key people from Barnsley College, Henry Boot and Northern Regeneration, take a tour of the site, participate in practical hands-on activities in brickwork, joinery and groundworks and find out how the industry experience gained at the Skills Village will help to prepare them for a career in construction.
Barnsley College Principal Christopher Webb said: “The Skills Village is an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together for the benefit of our students. The Open Event is an excellent opportunity for visitors to come along and find out how the Skills Village can help students to gain invaluable practical experience within the construction industry and ensure that at the end of their course they are ready for employment.”
Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director at Northern Regeneration, added: “Northern Regeneration is delighted to be working alongside Henry Boot and Barnsley College to support local talent in taking their first steps into the construction industry. The Barnsley Construction Skills Village not only provides ‘real life’ training, but also work placement and employment opportunities. The Open Event is fantastic for people looking to start their construction career.”
Ryan O’Loughlin, Project Director at Henry Boot Construction, said: “The Better Barnsley redevelopment is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an employment and skills legacy in Barnsley. The Skills Village underpins this objective and addresses the skills shortage by providing demand-led training to potential future employees.”
The Open Event is taking place on Wednesday 28 June at the Barnsley Construction Skills Village, Lambra Road, Barnsley, S70 1SF. There are two sessions taking place at 9.30am and 1.00pm.
