Course overview

Move forward in your finance career with an AAT qualification, opening doors to chartered accountancy, university, being self employed and more.  In this qualification you will master more complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, Advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.

As an accountant you’ll give advice, audit accounts and provide trustworthy information about financial records. This might involve financial reporting, taxation, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate finance, business recovery and insolvency, or accounting systems and processes.

You’ll have the choice of many different settings to work in, including public practice firms and industry and commerce, as well as in the not-for-profit and public sectors. Working strategically, your aim will be to maximise profitability on behalf of your client or employer.

Gaining an accountancy qualification will stand you in good stead for the future as accountants are in demand in a variety of sectors and organisations.

You could work in business or finance, the public sector, the charity sector or public practice (those who work in public practice offer accountancy services to clients). You could choose to work for anyone from a large international accountancy firm to a small local business. And you can work in general practice or specialise in areas such as:

  • auditing – conducting independent checks on organisations’ financial statements
  • tax – eg dealing with tax returns or advising organisations about tax
  • corporate finance – advising businesses about mergers and acquisitions
  • business recovery and insolvency – steering businesses through difficulties or winding them up
  • forensic accounting – detecting and preventing fraud

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by computer based examinations throughout the course as well as some project work. There will be a synoptic assessment at the end of each level, which will assess knowledge and understanding of the whole qualification.
