Move forward in your finance career with an AAT qualification, opening doors to chartered accountancy, university, being self employed and more. In this qualification you will master more complex accounting disciplines including financial processes, Advanced bookkeeping, final accounts and ethical practices for accountants.
As an accountant you’ll give advice, audit accounts and provide trustworthy information about financial records. This might involve financial reporting, taxation, auditing, forensic accounting, corporate finance, business recovery and insolvency, or accounting systems and processes.
You’ll have the choice of many different settings to work in, including public practice firms and industry and commerce, as well as in the not-for-profit and public sectors. Working strategically, your aim will be to maximise profitability on behalf of your client or employer.
Gaining an accountancy qualification will stand you in good stead for the future as accountants are in demand in a variety of sectors and organisations.
You could work in business or finance, the public sector, the charity sector or public practice (those who work in public practice offer accountancy services to clients). You could choose to work for anyone from a large international accountancy firm to a small local business. And you can work in general practice or specialise in areas such as:
You will be assessed by computer based examinations throughout the course as well as some project work. There will be a synoptic assessment at the end of each level, which will assess knowledge and understanding of the whole qualification.
You will need to provide your own calculator, writing materials, USB stick and Accounting text books. You will also need to organise and pay for your own AAT membership and pay for any resits required.

You can move into employment within a company, self-employment or further study. Universities and professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) offer exemptions to those who are AAT qualified.
