Course overview

This one year study programme starts in September 2018 and aims to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of the care and welfare for a variety of animals. (This course does not carry any UCAS points)

Course content

Based at our Wigfield Farm campus, this one year study programme is for learners who wish to improve their practical skills and knowledge of the care and welfare for a variety of animals and prepare themselves to work in this interesting industry.

The areas of study are:

  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace
  • Plan the handling and restraint of animals
  • Plan, supervise and control the movement of animals
  • Plan the accommodation of animals
  • Establish animals in a new environment
  • Manage the care of young animals
  • Handle animals

ABC course specifications

How will I be assessed?

You will complete a portfolio of practical and written evidence that shows achievement of all relevant learning outcomes

What equipment will I need?

All learners on land based programmes are required to wear standard uniform and also PPE for practical work in the form of steel toe capped boots and overalls.

What can I do next?

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress in to employment or further study.

Beyond college, there are many opportunities such as trainee veterinary nurse, pet shop supervisor, senior kennel worker, RSPCA

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
