Course overview

Bench joinery is the preparation, setting out, and manufacture of joinery components. Timber has been used for thousands of years, and it’s still an important construction material. It is used throughout the industry, and working with it can be extremely varied and rewarding.

Overall, woodworkers will need to enjoy using their hands, as well as a variety of both hand and power tools. Good hand-eye co-ordination is essential, as are accurate measuring skills. Our qualifications are aimed at people wishing to learn some skills in carpentry and joinery, to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade

Course content

You will study the following mandatory units:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Set up and operate a circular saw
  • Produce setting out details for bench joinery products
  • Mark out from setting out details for bench joinery products
  • Manufacture bench joinery products
  • You will complete 60 hours of work placement which will give you valuable work place experience.
  • A full tutorial programme to improve your employability skills and support you through your course.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this Diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

What equipment will I need?

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

What can I do next?

Successful completion of this Level 2 study programme could lead to progressing to the Level 3 Level 3 apprenticeship.  This will provide you with fully qualified status in this skill.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
