Business Administrator Level 2 Apprenticeship

Start Date / Duration

Apprenticeship programmes can start at any time. This programme will take a minimum of 15 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Three GCSEs at grade 3/D or above, plus GCSE English at grade 3 or above
  • You will need to find an employer to employ you as an apprentice. Please see our Apprenticeship vacancies.
  • You will need to be at least 16 years of age

Course overview

Business Administration skills are essential in many job roles. This apprenticeship will provide you with the skills you need to work effectively in a business environment.


Course content

You will study all of the mandatory units and choose units from the list below which relate to your job role. You will also study:

Mandatory Units

  • Communication in a business environment
  • Principles of providing administrative services
  • Principles of business document production and information management
  • Understand employer organisations
  • Manage personal performance and development
  • Develop working relationships with colleagues

Optional Units

  • Manage a diary system
  • Produce business documents
  • Collate and report data
  • Store and retrieve information
  • Produce minutes of meetings
  • Handle Mail
  • Provide a reception service
  • Prepare text from notes using touch typing
  • Archive information
  • Maintain and issue stationery and supplies
  • Organise business travel or accommodation
  • Administer the recruitment and selection process
  • Buddy a colleague to develop their skills
  • Use and maintain office equipment
  • Contribute to the organisation of an event
  • Health and safety in a business environment
  • Use a telephone and voicemail system
  • Meet and welcome visitors in a business environment
  • Using email
  • Data management software
  • Bespoke software
  • Use word processing software
  • Deliver customer service relationships

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence or e portfolio, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.

What equipment will I need?

You will be required to provide paper, writing materials, A4 ring binder file, extra wide dividers and clear plastic wallets. For e-portfolio you will require access to the internet.

Where will I study?

You will study within the workplace and attend classes at Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane Campus, Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2YW.

What can I do next?

Upon completion you could progress onto the Level 3 Business Administrator

Administration or apply for job roles including:

  • Administrator / Business Support Officer
  • Office Junior
  • Receptionist

How much does the course cost?

There is no cost to being an apprentice. All costs associated with your apprenticeship, including the cost of training and your salary, will be paid by your employer.

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
