Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English OR a Merit in a BTEC First Diploma in a relevant subject and GCSE English.

You will achieve

  • Extended Diploma in Business
  • Core Maths Level 3 qualification
  • Extended project qualification

Please note, This National Extended Diploma is delivered as two one-year programmes:

  • Year 1: Foundation Diploma.
  • Year 2: Extended Diploma. Students progressing to Year 2 are expected to have satisfactorily completed their first year programme before progressing to the second year.

Course overview

This course is ideal for those wanting to gain an in-depth understanding of the operations and structures of businesses in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

You will gain a broad range of business knowledge, skills and behaviours that employers are looking for. You can progress into a range of careers in marketing, finance, human resources, management, event planning and retail. You will also gain skills that will allow you to succeed at university or on a Higher Apprenticeship.

Upon completion, you will achieve a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, which is equivalent to three A Levels.

Course content

On the Extended Diploma you will study a range of business units which will provide an introduction to the fundamentals of business and a range of business specialisms including the following subject areas:

  • Exploring business
  • Developing a marketing campaign
  • Personal and business finance
  • Managing an event
  • International business
  • Recruitment and selection
  • Principles of management
  • Customer service
  • Business decision making

You will also achieve a qualification in:

  • Level 3 Core maths
  • Extended project qualification

Level 3 Business course specifications

There will be a period of work placement linked to the Extended Project Qualification.

Assessment is through a combination of internal and external methods. Twelve units are assessed through a range of techniques including course-work, case studies and practical projects including presentations and observations of business team activities. One unit is assessed through examination with the awarding body.

You will need to provide your own writing material, paper and folder. You will also need a storage device (USB) to save computerised work.

You can progress onto Higher Education courses in Business related areas including: Business, Law, Marketing, Events Management and Finance. It also supports progression directly into employment in business or Higher Education.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students
