Course overview

The programme aims to provide you with an introduction to the development of a range of skills and new opportunities through engagement with employers and study support. Skills including communication, problem solving, customer service, organisation, time management, personality and core values and meeting deadlines, may be specific to a chosen career pathway or transferable across a range of careers or further educational courses.

The programme will provide you with further opportunities to establish career pathways and explore other college courses through taster sessions and will prepare you for your next step.

Course content

The programme is offered as a work experience pathway, which requires placement hours (this can be with various employers) and weekly college attendance. The placement will be directly linked to your career aim.

  • Work preparation such as job searching, curriculum vitae (CV) development, cover letter writing, interview preparation, reflection of skill development and experiences
  • Work experience where students will work with employer/s to establish career pathways and skill development
  • English and maths (dependent on the qualifications on entry)
  • Tutorial workshop where the tutor will support to monitor progress, opportunities, experiences and targets with students and employers
  • Guest speakers/lectures from a range of sources such as industry workers and staff from across college
  • Networking with others and employers
  • Develop digital literacy through official Microsoft Digital Badges

Assessment will occur continually throughout the programme and will involve developing a portfolio of evidence showing development in relation to your journey.

You will be informed by the staff team of any stationery requirements upon commencement of the programme.

This programme is designed to enable candidates to enter employment within their desired industry, start an apprenticeship or re-engage back into college to study a course by utilising the skills, behaviours and experiences acquired during this provision.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

Barnsley College has a range of sports opportunities for all students to take part in, gain professional training and compete nationally and internationally. We also have a state-of-the-art fitness village, Honeywell Sports Village where students can make use of our fitness suite, spinning studio and classes for competitive rates. You don’t have to be studying sport to get involved in the Sports Academy.

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
