Entry requirements

Level 1 Certificate

  • Successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above.

Level 1 Diploma

  • Three GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English
  • Successful interview with an initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above.

  • City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Construction Skills (Carpentry and Joinery)
  • GCSE/Functional Skills in maths and English

Course overview

Bench joinery is the preparation, setting out, and manufacture of joinery components while site carpentry focuses on the installation of the joinery components and on the setting out and fabrication of timber elements used in construction. Learn how to work with wood and become a professional carpenter as you find out how to build floors, roofs, doors and stairs.

Level 1 introduces you to carpentry and joinery skills and allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

Course content

Level 1 Certificate

To achieve the Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery learners must achieve a minimum of 15 credits, 3 credits from the mandatory unit and a minimum of 12 credits from the optional units.


  • Introduction to health and safety in construction


  • Constructing halving joints
  • Constructing housing joints
  • Introduction to the construction industry
  • Constructing through mortice and tenon joints
  • Constructing angled halving joints
  • Constructing bridle joints
  • Constructing haunched mortice and tenon joints
  • Constructing stub mortice and tenon joints
  • Fixing architraves and skirtings
  • Constructing and fixing hatch linings
  • Fitting locks and latches

Level 1 Diploma

  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Produce woodworking joints

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this qualification means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

What equipment will I need?

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

What can I do next?

  • Successful completion of this Level 1 Certificate could lead to the level 1 diploma
  • Sucessful completion of level 1 diploma could lead to onto  the Level 2 study programme.
  • Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an Apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
