  • Three GCSEs at grade 2/E or above including English

OR

  • Successful initial assessment in English and maths at Entry Level 3 or above.
You will achieve
  •  Level 1 in Construction Skills (Carpentry and Joinery)
  • GCSE/Functional Skills in maths and English

Course overview

Bench joinery is the preparation, setting out, and manufacture of joinery components while site carpentry focuses on the installation of the joinery components and on the setting out and fabrication of timber elements used in construction.

Learn how to work with wood and become a professional carpenter as you find out how to build floors, roofs, doors and stairs.

Level 1 introduces you to carpentry and joinery skills and allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this Diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

What equipment will I need?

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

What can I do next?

Successful completion of this Level 1 study programme could lead to progression to either of our  Site or Bench study programmes Alternatively, you could use the qualification to improve your chances of gaining an Apprenticeship which will give you valuable work experience.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths or a higher level maths qualification we can help you do that too.
