This 1-2 year study programme starts in September.

Entry requirements

For the Level 2 course, you will need three GCSEs at grade 2 or above including English. If you do not have English GCSE grade 2 you will need to have a successful  interview with an initial assessment in English and Maths at Entry Level 3 or above.

If you have four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths, you will have the chance to fast-track to year two after successful completion of a six week assessment period.

To progress to Level 3 you must complete Level 2.

Course overview

If you want to work in the construction industry and specialise in working with wood then this is the course for you.

You will learn the skills and techniques required for the carpentry and joinery trade. This trade focuses on the installation of joinery components and on the setting out and fabrication of timber elements.

This course provides a general understanding of theory and develops the practical skills needed to work as a Carpenter or Joiner.

Course themes

  • Introduction to health and safety in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing operation

Throughout the study programme your work will be assessed for a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. Achieving this Diploma means that you have reached the standards expected by the industry.

Work boots, gloves and eye protection will need to be purchased prior to starting your course, financial assistance may be available.

On successful completion of this Level 2 study programme, you could progress to the Level 3 course could lead to progressing to the Level 3 apprenticeship.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

Having good English and Maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and Maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and Maths we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level Maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).

This can be added to your study programme.
