This course has various start dates throughout the year and will take 12 months to complete.

Entry requirements
  • Learners will need to be at least 18 years of age
  • You need to be a volunteer or employed within the childcare/playwork setting in an OFSTED inspected environment
  • As your programme may involve working with children, you will be required to undertake a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • Students will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme

Course overview

These qualifications are an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16 in play environments. They provide an understanding of playwork values, and the importance of play and playwork in children and young people’s lives.

Course content

You will study all 12 mandatory units, totalling 45 credits, plus a minimum of 16 credits from the optional units, making a total of 61 credits to achieve the CACHE Level 2 Diploma in Playwork.

Mandatory Units

Playwork principles
• Working within a play environment with children and young people
• Supporting children and young people’s play
• Relationships in the play environment
• Health and safety in the play environment
• The safeguarding and welfare of children and young people in the play environment
• Developing own playwork and team practice
• Reflective playwork practice

Optional Units

• Contribute to providing food and drink in the play environment
• Facilitate a specific play opportunity at children or young people’s request
• Support the development of playwork opportunities in the community
• Contribute to supporting disabled children and young people in the play environment
• Support work with parents and carers in the play environment
• Carry out playwork in a school setting
• Contribute to the administration of the play environment
• Support the travel of children and young people outside the play environment

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, observations in the workplace and assessment tasks.

What equipment will I need?

The course is an E-portfolio using OneFile, access to a computer/laptop and internet will be required. If this is not suitable, a paper base portfolio could be accessed.
