  • Four GCSEs at grades 3/D or above, including English and maths or Level 1 Functional skills maths and English
  • Or successful completion of a Level 1 Diploma in a relevant subject plus GCSE English and GCSE maths at grade 3/D or functional skills maths and English at Level 1

Course overview

This qualification has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with babies and young children from birth to 7 years of age. It covers a wide range of areas including supporting care routines for babies and young children, supporting the well-being of babies and young children for healthy lifestyles and supporting the needs of babies and young children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Course content

The diploma requires 14 mandatory units and mandatory placement experience of 250 hours.

  • Roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner
  • Health and safety of babies and young children in the early years
  • Equality, diversity and inclusive practice in Early Years Settings
  • Safeguarding, protection and welfare of babies and young children in Early Years Settings
  • Understand how to support children’s development
  • Promote positive behaviour in Early Years Settings
  • Promote play in Early Years Settings
  • Support care routines for babies and young children
  • Support the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes
  • Support well-being of babies and young children for healthy lifestyles
  • Support babies and young children to be physically active
  • Partnership working in the early years
  • Promoting positive behaviour in Early Years Settings
  • Support the needs of the child in preparing for school

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutor and assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation in placement, oral questioning, portfolio of evidence, written assignments or tasks.

What equipment will I need?

  • A current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate
  • A text book recommended by your tutor and stationery
  • A willingness to travel to your placement (this may on occasion involve two bus journeys)
  • A pack is available on enrolment including two polo shirts for your work placement uniform, a CACHE handbook, an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) textbook, first aid training and, if required, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The pack costs £150

What can I do next?

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification.

How much does the course cost?

16 – 18 year olds

Full-time Barnsley College students aged 16-18 years old do not have to pay tuition fees.

19+ Students

Aged 19 or over and thinking about further education?

You may be eligible for free or reduced course fees . Please refer to our page ‘paying for your course.’

English and Maths

Having good English and maths qualifications are important for most careers and we want to give you the help you need to succeed.

If you are aged 16 – 19 and don’t already have a grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths they will automatically be included in your study programme. If you want to work towards higher grades in English and maths  we can help you do that too.

Need a higher level maths qualification? We offer a Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths).
